Drying your clothes outside on a clothesline has countless benefits. Yet some people don’t like hanging clothes because it leads to stiff articles of clothing.

Here are some tips to get your articles of clothing feeling fluffy while still taking advantage of the other benefits air drying gives you.

One thing you can do is to fluff your clothes in the dryer right before, or after, hanging them on the clothesline for about 10 minutes. Estimates place your family’s clothes dryer at 4-6 percent of annual energy usage, so any reduction in using the dryer is a plus.

Another thing to consider is using less laundry detergent. Most likely you can cut your laundry detergent use in half to still clean them, and reduce the stiff feeling after coming off the clothesline.

It may seem obvious, but giving your clothes a good shake can help reduce stiffness. Your muscles can do the same work as the tumbling them in the dryer.

And the last thing you can do is… nothing. Stiff clothes are never as appealing as fluffier ones. But within minutes of the first wear you will forget your clothes didn’t come from the dryer.
